Melany Felsen is a native of New Jersey. She began studying classical piano at the age of four and added clarinet study at the age of ten. She graduated Cum Laude from The College of New Jersey with her Bachelors Degree in Music Education with a Clarinet Concentration. While attending there, she studied with Roger McKinney and was principal clarinetist of their orchestra, pit orchestra, and wind ensemble.

Melany graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University with her Masters Degree in Clarinet Performance. While attending the Peabody Institute she studied with Steven Barta. Melany was principal clarinet of both the Concert and Symphony Orchestras at Peabody and performed with many chamber groups in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area.

Melany is the recipient of the Martha and William Bill Memorial Prize, the Excellence in Woodwind Performance, and the Jane Emel Donato Scholarship. She has been principal clarinet for the Summer Opera Theater Company of Washington D.C., the section leader for the Hanover Wind Symphony, and has been affiliated with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra as well as the Eastern Wind Symphony.

Melany has studied clarinet with Edward Palanker, Enid Blount, Mark Nuccio, and David Singer. She has also performed for Lawrie Bloom and Ricardo Morales. Her music has allowed her to perform both in and out of the United States. Melany has performed in Vienna, Haag, Linz, Bad Ishel, and Salzburg. She has also performed at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, and also the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. She has performed with Leon Flesher and students from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory in Singapore.

In addition to performing, Melany is on the music faculty for the Mount Olive School District. She is a member of both the New Jersey Educators Association and the Music Educators National Conference and has also just recently been nominated for the Who’s Who of American Women.
