NAOMI GRAY

Cellist Naomi Gray is a freelance performer and teacher in the Philadelphia area. A member of the Harrisburg Symphony, she also frequently appears with such ensembles as the Philadelphia Virtuosi, Ensemble Chamber Music Now!, Black Pearl Chamber Orchestra, Lancaster Symphony, and Delaware Symphony.

Recently Ms. Gray finished a three-year fellowship as a member of the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. During her tenure, she collaborated with such renowned artists as Paula Robison and Yo-Yo Ma, for whom she also performed in a master class.

Ms. Gray was invited to join other New World Symphony musicians in presenting chamber music recitals around the Umbria region of Italy. A new CD of works by composer Sy Brandon, Collage, features her and two other orchestra members in their prize-winning recording of his Meditation and Dance.

Ms. Gray has performed under such conductors as Sir Roger Norrington, the late Sergiu Commissiona, and Stéphane Denève and has also led the cello section of the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra under the direction of Valery Gergiev. Concerto appearances include those with National Repertory Orchestra and the Endless Mountain Music Festival Orchestra.

She has attended the International Cello Seminar in the Jezreel Valley, Israel, AIMS in Graz, and the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival. Ms. Gray has participated in master classes with Bernard Greenhouse and Steven Doane. She has played in chamber music master classes given by William Preucil, Menachem Wiesenberg, Toby Appel, and members of the Colorado, Emerson, and Ysaye Quartets.

Ms. Gray was a teaching assistant at University of Southern California, and has coached chamber music at the National High School Music Institute at Northwestern University.

Currently she teaches cello and piano to students of all ages in the Philadelphia area. Ms. Gray attended Northwestern University as a student of Hans Jorgen Jensen, earning dual undergraduate degrees in Cello Performance and Psychology. She later completed an M.M. from the University of Southern California, under the instruction of Ronald Leonard.
