Chamber Music Ensembles

Individual ensemble settings help students develop additional musical independence and further improve their individual and ensemble playing skills while rehearsing and performing challenging repertoire.

Types and sizes of ensembles vary for different instruments. String players may also be placed in string quartets, brass players may be placed in brass quintets, and so on.

Performances by these ensembles take place at various times during the final weekend of each session.

All students may participate in chamber ensembles while enrolled in the festival.

Here is a list of available ensembles, though many more may be formed during the summer.

  • Bass Ensemble
  • Flute Ensembles
  • Piano Ensembles
  • Brass Ensembles
  • Guitar Ensembles
  • Vocal Chamber Ensembles
  • Cello Ensemble

Solo Performance Opportunities

There are numerous solo and ensemble performance opportunities at NYSMF. Students are required to audition in order to perform in solo recitals.

Student Concerto Competition

This competition is held during each 2-week session of the festival. Students may audition with amovement of a standard concerto, whcih must be played from memory. Student auditionees must provide the concerto music and piano accompaniment themselves, as we have no on-demand music library available. One winner will be selected by a panel of faculty judges each session, and will perform with one of the festival orchestras during a weekend concert.

Student Recital Series

Students may also audition before a panel of faculty judges to participate in the Student Recital Series. Students must provide the solo and piano accompaniment music, but are not required to memorize the piece for the audition. Up to six students will be selected to perform at various times during the final session concerts every two weeks.
