IMPORTANT NOTE FOR TRAVELLERS YOUNGER THAN 15 YEARS OF AGE
For some insane reason, most airlines consider unaccompanied minors younger than 15 a great threat to their business. I think it is likely due to all the wild drinking, smoking, partying, and other Minors Gone Wild stuff that kids that age do. So BEFORE you buy a plane ticket regarding your own dangerously underage travelling musician kid, PLEASE check with your chosen airline and airport about their policies. Thanks!

Suggested Travel Plan for Long-Distance and International Students

If you are a student who will travel a very long distance to join us this summer, you may be tempted to book a flight to John F. Kennedy International Airport or LaGuardia Airport in New York City. You may even take a flight to New Jersey's Newark International Airport.

HOWEVER, all of these giant flight hubs are nearly 225 miles away from NYSMF in Oneonta!

Don't panic. We have outlined a three-step travel plan below that many NYSMF students have used successfully.

  1. AIRPORT -> PORT AUTHORITY BUS TERMINAL
After disembarking from your plane, take a shuttle bus to PORT AUTHORITY BUS TERMINAL in New York City. Several low-cost shuttle bus companies will take you directly into the station.
  2. PORT AUTHORITY -> BUS TO ONEONTA
Adirondack Trailways (800) 776-7548 is the primary (and possibly only) bus company that goes directly to Oneonta, so please contact them for fare and schedule information. (Click for more information.)
  3. FREE PICKUP IN ONEONTA
NYSMF offers free pickup/dropoff service to the Oneonta Bus Terminal, located in downtown Oneonta. Please email us well in advance of the time that you will be arriving and departing, and we will make the arrangements. Or just call our main office when you arrive, and we'll send someone to get you!

You may do the same plan, in reverse, to get home safely.

IMPORTANT YET UNBELIEVABLY ANNOYING NOTICE TO BUS, PLANE, AND TRAIN TRAVELLERS UNDER THE AGE OF 14!!!!

According to Amtrak and Trailways, if you are 14 years of age and younger, you are NOT qualified to travel unaccompanied on their vehicles.

I know, I know, it's ludicrous and nasty and completely ignores the fact that 99.9999999% of all damages to trains and buses are caused by people OVER the age of 14 ... but no matter what, you will need to contact Amtrak and/or Trailways directly to figure out what hoops you need to leap through in order to get to NYSMF.

We apologize for these companies' ridiculous, unnecessary, and just plain mean policies. NYSMF has nothing to do with them. If we had our way, we would allow any one of any age to give them money for the privilege of travelling on their lovely, modern, clean, spotless, pristine, precious vehicles. Even 90-year-old squirrels.
