Musical Studies Courses Beginning Guitar Designed for students with no prior experience in playing the guitar. Students will explore all the instrument’s basics, including left- and right-hand techniques, basic chords and scales, and hand positions. Beginning Piano (for non pianists) Recommended for those with no previous keyboard experience. This class emphasizes fundamental piano technique for instrumentalists who wish to learn to play the piano. Conducting An introduction to the technique of leading larger ensembles. Basic beat patterns, dynamics, phrasing, tempo changes, cueing, cut-offs, changing beat units, interpretation, baton technique, and score-reading skills will be studied. Music History The study of jazz, rock and roll, musical theatre, opera, and more. Eras will range from antiquity to the 21st century. Orchestration and Arranging Advanced techniques of orchestration and scoring for instrumental ensembles, symphony orchestra, and band. Various combinations of instruments are considered with respect to timbre, transposition, range, and doubling. Theory and Ear Training Students learn all aspects of music, including sight singing in different clefs, singing and recognizing intervals and triads, and rhythmic and melodic dictation skills.
